Weekend Review - Mon 16th April
Jackie Robinson's Legacy
The weekend was dominated by the anniversary of Jackie Robinson's Major League debut. There's plenty you can search out as there's reports and discussion across the web, but try SI, the BBC, and Athlon for starters. There's also an interesting article from Dave Anderson in the NY Times - but in one of those annoying things that newspapers often insist on, registration is required. Back in registration free mode, John Donovan in SI offers an article that's worth a look and ESPN has an extract available from After Jackie.
Not sure whether the timing of the article was deliberate, but as one barrier came down, we find that another is still very much alive and kicking. David James writes in his Observer column about the lack of openly gay footballers in the English game and, judging from the response the article generated by some (and I stress only some) of the bloggers, it's easy to see why there's not many players putting their hands up and asking to be first.
With regard to reviews, The Damned Utd seems to have hogged the sports selection this week. Reviewed favourably (if briefly) in The Times, The Guardian and The Telegraph.
Beyond that, The Independent reviews Penguins Stopped Play and there's also a very brief review of A Fine Place to Daydream in the NY Times.
