Heroic failure...again
At last a decent game of cricket.
At last after the Woolmer tragedy, empty grounds and one sided mismatches it's a joy to actually write about a great game of cricket. Typically England didn't beat Sri Lanka but it's about time we had a last ball thriller.
What struck me watching the game last night was how watching England play was like watching their footballing equivalents in their World Cup. There's the competent if uninspiring beating of the minnows, tactical stubbornness (everyone knows that Gerrard and Lampard can't play together, just as every one knows that a top 3 of Joyce, Vaughan and Bell isn't going to win you much), the moment of farce when things are looking good (Bell's run out followed by a comical collapse), then just when you think all hope is gone there's a bit of backs to the wall fighting spirit. (Thankyou Messrs Nixon and Bopara). This is England though, so you know it's all going to end in heroic failure. And sure enough Ravi Bopara's last ball dismissal (the equivalent of the obligatory Sol Campbell extra time disallowed header) brought defeat. At least the cricketers have still got the chance to put things right. Can't see it against Australia though.
And while on the subject of cricket it's good to see that despite the retirement of Chris Cairns, New Zealand can still boast the 'Campest Man In Cricket'. Take a bow Mr Jacob Oram. Those blonde highlights and curly perm really are a joy to behold.
