Another Week....Another Weekend Review

More awards, Stealing the Waves and the books you don't want to finish.

We should start off with an announcement that we missed at the end of last week. The shortlist for the British Book Awards were announced last Wednesday. These awards cover a range of different categories but they do include an award for best Sports Book. The 4 titles that made it onto the shortlist are:

  1. Steven Gerrard - My Autobiography
  2. Alan Brazil - There's An Awful Lot of Bubbly in Brazil
  3. Pele - The Autobiography
  4. Harry Thompson - Penguins Stopped Play

Hmmm, I'm not sure there's much that's positive to say about that particular shortlist. If any of those really were the best sports book published in 2006, we may as well just all pack it in and go home now.

Onto more positive thoughts.

Andy Martin's Stealing the Wave is getting some impressive coverage. It was reviewed in the Indy today and has also had reviews in the Times and Telegraph recently. I've got my copy ready to start later today and I must admit I'm looking forward to it. I'll post my review once I've read it.

Peter Marinello's Fallen Idle began a 2 part serialisation in The Times on Saturday. The second part, published today, can be read here. I've just finished an advance copy of the book and will be posting my review later today.

Finally, What do David Beckham and Bill Clinton have in common? Well, leaving aside any potentially libellous gags, they both feature in a poll of unfinished reads. Beckham's My Side comes in at number 3 and Clinton's My Life makes the number 2 spot in the non fiction selections.

Personally I hate not finishing a book. I don't know why - I mean, it's not as if I've invested that much money in it and if it was another form of entertainment such as TV or a film, I wouldn't have any hesitation in stopping if I didn't like it - but it just seems, well, wrong.

In saying that, I have to own up to not finishing a book recently. Somewhat surprisingly, given that it was a title I was really looking forward to, my one to fall by the wayside was Tunney. I managed about the first 150 pages but just couldn't get into it. I'm convinced I'll give it another go - maybe when it goes into paperback - although I'm sure loads said that about Beckham as well.

Ok, that's today's post. I'm off to not finish another book.....
