Official 2006 World Series Programs
World Series Programs and Tony La Russa
The Cardinals power home!
Despite coming into the World Series with the second-worst
record of any pennant winner in history, the experience of the Cardinals was too much for the Tigers. By winning their 10th World Series, and their first since 1982, the Cardinals moved outright into second place in the all-time winning World Series. For all you Cardinals fans wanting to record the moment, we've got a limited number of Official Programs available for purchase.
In winning his second World Series, La Russa joined Sparky Anderson in being the only managers to have won World Series titles with teams in both the National League and the American League. La Russa is acknowledged as one of the game's great managers and now stands third in all-time victories by a manager.
He was the subject of a fascinating book entitled Three Nights in August by H.G. Bizzinger.
Originally published in 2005, the paperback version was released earlier this year.
Naturally, its release was not something that gained much publicity over here, but it's an intriguing insight into the thinking and strategy of a baseball manager.
Using a three game series against the Cubs as its backdrop (with more than a passing nod to Nine Innings), we're presented with the thoughts and musings of La Russa as well as Bissinger's exploration of the nuances and subleties of the game.
It didn't meet with universal approval (I suppose that when your previous sports book is the legendary Friday Night Lights, you set a high bar) but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it's well worth a look.
