From the Publisher:
Born from a major industrial company's desire to develop sport for its workers, Pilkington Recs are an important part of the sporting history of St Helens. Their story encompasses rugby union, association football and rugby league. They provided St Helens with its first rugby international, Jim Pyke in 1892, and became one of the most respected teams in Lancashire.
After a brief flirtation with the Northern Union, they switched to football. The Recs then made their mark in the Lancashire Combination and Lancashire Cup, beating Liverpool and Manchester United reserves.
They returned to their true vocation - professional rugby league - between the wars and won the Lancashire Cup in 1923. Despite topping the league in 1927 and providing three players for the 1928 British Lions Australian tour, the team disbanded in 1939. It was to be another 10 years before the famous jerseys were seen again, this time in an amateur context.
A club with tremendous fighting spirit and great characters, they were the best amateur team in the country in the 1970s and early 1980s, winning the BARLA National Cup four times. In the new millennium, Recs' strength lies in their depth of teams from open age to under-8s. The club still plays an important role in the sporting life of a proud rugby league town.

It's A Fact!
"There have only been three Cockers who have topped the UK singles chart. Jarvis and Joe from Sheffield, obviously, and Leeds United's erstwhile trainer, Les, with the 1970 World Cup song Back Home."
