From the Publisher:
Luiz Felipe 'Big Phil' Scolari is one of the most controversial and successful of football managers. A former player, Scolari was known as an uncompromising defender who acquired the nickname 'wooden leg'. When he took up management he soon gained a reputation for a quick temper and for his histrionic performances pitch side. Recently he was subject of a UEFA investigation when he apparently threw a left hook at a Serbian player who had annoyed him. He has worked in South America, Korea and Portugal but it was his triumph in taking on a dispirited and failing Brazilian team in 2001 and leading them to success in the 2002 World Cup that established his reputation. He achieved similar results in Portugal taking over another failing national team and leading them to the Euro 2004 finals.
It was no surprise that when England were looking for a replacement manager it was Scolari that they turned to,
though after a contra-temps with the British media he swiftly turned down their offer. The book contains revealing insights into this period. It also follows his life and career right through to Summer 2008 and his appointment as Chelsea manager.
Scolari's methods are often controversial. For the 2002 World Cup he gave each of his Brazilian players Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War' - a 6th century Chinese military treatise. He is a strong motivator and has also been known to use videos to engender national pride and team spirit. Ultimately it is his ability to work with the players which has led to such success. By them, he is seen as both a 'father' and a friend.
Jose Carlos Freitas is an established and highly respected Portuguese journalist. He knows Scolari well and has met
and interviewed him on innumerable occasions.
