From the Publisher:
Rugby has been played in Sharlston for at least 125 years. This small mining village has a proud rugby league tradition. It has produced some of the game's greatest players and coaches, including Jonty Parkin, the Fox brothers, Carl Dooler, Herbert Goodfellow and many more.
The village team, Sharlston Rovers, are one of the sport's most famous amatuer clubs. This book covers the full story of the club, from its earliest days in the 1880s to the Yorkshire Cup win in 2005-06. Based on extensive research, it includes:
* The Challenge Cup victories over Workington Town in 1946 and Dewsbury in 2004
* The Challenge Cup matches against Barrow and Bramley in the 1930s
* Yorkshire Cup wins in 1951-52 and 2005-06
* A full season-by-seaon history of the club
* A record of the players from Sharlston who have played professional rugby league.
But above all this is the story of a famous rugby league village community and their club. It is about the people who played for the club and those who supported it off the pitch. It recalls fanous victories against local rivals, and hard times when the club collapsed or was banned by the Rugby Football League. It covers the history of the club's famous ground, Back o't' wall. It includes forewards by Neil Fox MBE and Peter Fox, a preface by David Hobbs and introduction by Maurice Oldroyd.
