From the Publisher:
The first sports commentary was of the fight of the century, the world heavyweight title bout between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier in New Jersey in 1921. The first British broadcast was also of a bout involving Carpentier: this time he was facing Ted Kid Lewis at Olympia and the commentator was W. Southey. British newspapers, worried about the threat of radio, managed to stop commentators by insisting that radio could broadcast only reports by agencies, but this did not last. Ever since, radio sports commentary has been going from strength to strength.
