From the Publisher:
This book talks about one of the biggest dangers that threatens modern high-performance sport, which has become an increasingly professional part of sports. Doping plays also an integral part in the youth culture and the fitness scene. Biochemical manipulations and the favourable drug tendencies of today's society not only threaten sports and the movement culture but also our public health. Today's young generation serves as a measure of this in society.
This book shows the course of historic change and illustrates the obvious destructive results caused by doping in sports. It is divided into several regional sections which shed light on the practice of deception in sport through pharmaceutical manipulations throughout the years, its manipulation impact on different societies, and the use of various kinds of drugs and methods (for example – blood doping).
Part A shows "models" of doping in Olympic and professional sports as well as an analysis of the political and cultural background in one country. Italy's fighter Sandro Donati explains his experiences with "Doping and the anti-doping battle in Italian Sport". Two case studies analyze the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. The Polish model and "The Development of Doping and Doping Control in Britain" as well as "Doping in French Sport" and "Cycling in Denmark" follow. Part B discusses drug abuse beyond the IOC-rules, in leisure sport and – the latest phenomena – in Youth culture, as well as the aspects of law. Just one finding from France: 4.0% of 16 year-old adolescents declared that they have been enticed into using products which are prohibited for athletes!
There will be much work within the European Community to fight against doping and drug abuse in elite sport and leisure sports: legal work and prevention, based on analytic work of sports science, should come together, which might be understood as one of the messages of this book project by European authors.

It's A Fact!
At 6 foot 7 Kevin Francis was the tallest player in the football league. And so said every newspaper article and programme feature written about him throughout his career. He's now a long distance lorry driver.
