One of the greatest footballers Britain has produced, John Charles joined Leeds United at 16, where he became the most prolific centre-forward in the club's history. He then attracted the attention of Juventus, who paid a British record of £65,000 to take him to Turin in 1957. Despite coming up against the world's most ruthless defences, the Wales international striker scored an incredible 105 goals in 178 appearances for the Italian giants and helped them to win three Serie A titles in five years. Off the pitch, he enjoyed a film-star lifestyle in Turin during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He opened a restaurant, recorded songs and mixed with the likes of Sophia Loren. His football career later see-sawed between British clubs, as well as another stint in Italy, but he never again attained the glory he had enjoyed at his peak with Juventus.
