From Word of Sport:

Peter Gent was actually a former Dallas Cowboy. This is a brutal and powerful novel, in which he opens up the world of pro football - the drugs, the sex,the coaches without conscience and the fans without pity. Originally published in 1973.

Gent played for the Cowboys so has a real insight into the tough heart of the game, which his book certainly reflects. It's a dark tale of ruthless football owners and management, using players until their bodies break down whilst rooting out anyone who doesn't conform to the their imposed ideal. A good read, but I prefered th efilm starring Nick Nolte! The book and film have different endings (with the film's much more positive!)

It's A Fact!

"In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes when you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase, 'Goodnight, sleep tight.' "
