From Word of Sport:
Fascinating account of a year spent with Castel di Sangro, as this tiny club tried to survive following promotion to Serie B. McGinniss portrays a town in the grip of a near religious frenzy, but his wide-eyed enthusiasm for the team is undermined by scandal, farce and tragedy.
Despite the excellence, it's not without flaws. The author has a habit of making himself rather than the story, the centre of attention and the excessive explantion of football terms is extremely annoying. Admittedly, he's an American author and presumably offering detail to his American readership, but if you really don't know what a penalty is, are you going to be reading this anyway? Still, if you can get past those gripes, you'll find a wonderful story.
From the Publisher:
Through 1996 and 1997 Joe McGinniss followed the Italian football season from Castel di Sangro, a small town in the Abruzzi region of Italy. This is the story of a team and a town with no aspirations, just a passion for soccer, and how that passion enabled the di Sangro club to reach almost the top of the professional game in Italy. It is the story of how a a dot on the map was transformed into a place of sporting magic, miracles and wonder.
