From Word of Sport:

In 1975 in Kinshasa, Zaire, Muhammad Ali met the undefeated (some said unconquerable) George Foreman for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship. How Ali first out-thought then out-fought the gargantuan Foreman is the crux of this fabulously perceptive and well-written account of The Rumble in the Jungle.

From the Publisher:

Norman Mailer's The Fight focuses on the 1975 World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in Kinshasa, Zaire. Muhammad Ali met George Foreman in the ring. Foreman's genius employed silence, serenity and cunning. He had never been defeated. His hands were his instrument, and 'he kept them in his pockets the way a hunter lays his rifle back into its velvet case'. Together the two men made boxing history in an explosive
meeting of two great minds, two iron wills and monumental egos.

Mailer's acclaimed account of the Rumble in the Jungle - the Heavyweight title showdown between Muhammad Ali and George Forman. Mailer's language sometimes detracts from the story, and he gets a little too diverted in trying to capture a concept of African spirituality and Black male sexuality. Still, The Fight is an engaging read; with a look inside Ali's training camp during the build up to the fight.
Although other boxing authors (noteably Ferdie Pacheco, the "fight doctor" who was in Ali's corner for most of his career) have rubbished much of Mailer's opinions on boxing, The Fight is certainly worth reading! There is a genuine build up of tension and excitement as the fight draws near. Mailer manages to put down much of Ali's charisma and charm.

It's A Fact!

"There have only been three Cockers who have topped the UK singles chart. Jarvis and Joe from Sheffield, obviously, and Leeds United's erstwhile trainer, Les, with the 1970 World Cup song Back Home."
