From the Publisher:
At the tender age of just 22, Lewis Hamilton is already a genuine sporting phenomenon. His explosive arrival on the Formula 1 scene this year has been the biggest news in British sport for many years. In My Story, for the first time Lewis Hamilton opens up about his amazing rise to the top, the simmering rivalry with Spanish team-mate Alonso, his frightening crash in final qualifying at the European Grand Prix in Germany, and his special relationship with both his father and his brother, and McLaren supremo Ron Dennis.
In his debut season, Hamilton has stunned the world of motor racing by finishing on the podium in his first nine consecutive races – the first driver to do so in the sport’s 57-year history. He has so far won the Canadian, American and Hungarian GPs and currently leads the World Drivers’ Championship from McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso. In the process he has become the youngest driver ever to lead the championship.
But bare statistics alone do scant justice to the amazing impact Lewis Hamilton has had on the sporting landscape this year.
Given a very grounded upbringing by his hugely dedicated father in unremarkable Stevenage in Hertfordshire, Hamilton is the first black driver to compete in Formula 1. At a motor sport dinner and wearing a borrowed suit, a nine-year-old Hamilton approached McLaren team boss Ron Dennis with the prescient words: “I want to drive for McLaren and be world champion.
The youngster was soon rising rapidly through the Junior and Formula ranks, dominating every series in which he participated with his raw speed, canny race craft and, above all, a maturity beyond his years.
Signed by Ron Dennis as a thirteen-year-old, Hamilton was the youngest driver ever to secure an F1 contract. Now he finds himself lauded by the great and the good of Formula 1, with the likes of Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss, Murray Walker and Damon Hill (Britain’s last world champion) effusive in their praise of his prodigious and unique talent.
